Crochet Smash

I had a sudden inspiration to make a quick crochet cap—no special reason, just because beanies are one of my favorite fast projects! The combination of wheat yellow and hot pink yarns felt vibrant and fun, so I decided to give it a try.

I made the cap to fit my head, which measures about 21 inches around. Here’s how I worked it up:

  • I started with a magic circle and crocheted 10 double crochets (dc) into the ring.
  • Round 2: 20 dc (2 dc in each stitch)
  • Round 3: 30 dc (2 dc in one stitch, then 1 dc in the next stitch)
  • Round 4: 40 dc (2 dc in the first stitch, then 1 dc in each of the next two stitches)
  • Round 5: 50 dc (2 dc in one stitch, then 1 dc in each of the next three stitches)
  • Round 6: 60 dc. At this point, the crown of the cap fits me well, so I stopped increasing.

For the following rounds:

  • Round 7: 2 dc in one stitch, skip the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch, join with a slip stitch.
  • Round 8: Chain 4, then repeat (skip one dc, dc in the next dc, chain 1) around. Slip stitch to join the round.

Repeat R7 and R8 until you reach your desired height.

For the edging:

  • Round 1: Chain 2, half double crochet (hdc) in each stitch around.
  • Round 2: Chain 3, then (front post double crochet (fpdc) in the next stitch, back post double crochet (bpdc) in the next stitch) — repeat to the end. Join with a slip stitch.
  • Round 3: Repeat Round 2 for a nice textured edging.

Finish off and weave in the yarn tail.

You can change colors each round or use one color for the entire beanie—I chose to use two colors for a fun look.

A video tutorial for this beanie is available on my channel. The video shows how to make a baby beanie, but with the written pattern here, you can easily customize the size to fit anyone.
